How to Join LEU

Becoming a member of Longmont Emergency Unit requires a heavy commitment to serving your community. Full membership requires a minimum dedication of approximately 20 hours per month. If you would like to join LEU the process and requirements are outlined below. LEU also has support positions available for individuals with special skills and admin personnel. Support personnel have reduced membership requirements but are not permitted to respond to emergency incidents.

Application Process – Prospective members must go through a number of steps, each step must be completed successfully to move forward in the application process

  1. Station tour – This is an opportunity to learn about what LEU does, how we do it, what we are looking for in a volunteer, and get any questions answered you may have.
  2. Application – All applications must be filled out digitally, this can be done on site or the application may be emailed to the prospective member, filled out, and returned.
  3. Interview – Interviews are conducted by a board, this board is composed of three general members. Applicants are scored during this interview process and must meet a minimum standard to move forward.
  4. Background Investigation – Applicants must complete a background check through our third-party company called Intellicorp. They run a full consumer background that includes criminal history and driving record. Applicants must bring in their driver’s license, social security card, and/or birth certificate. Applicants are responsible for all costs associated with their background investigation, the typical cost per Applicant is $30. References will be checked and employment history may be confirmed.
  5. Chief Interview – the applicant will be notified if there any questions or if their application has been approved.

Trainee Rescuer – Job Description:

The primary function of a LEU Trainee Rescuer is to respond to emergency situations in Boulder County and the City of Longmont.  A Trainee Rescuer operates under the direct supervision and instruction of a General Rescuer at all times.  Trainee Rescuers are also expected to attend training and events as necessary to gain the experience and knowledge to advance to Apprentice Rescuer.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • The geography of the City of Longmont and surrounding areas, (or the ability to quickly learn this information), including the streets system, parks, and bodies of water.

  • Basic mathematical and science skills.

  • Computers, Word, Excel, Google mail, Google Drive, Google Docs, and Google Sheets, etc.

Ability to:

    • Use deductive reasoning to determine best course of action when responding to emergencies.

    • Work under extremely stressful situations, day and night, which result from emergency situations, including the responsibility for remaining calm and carrying out all duties with the recognition of the threat to life and property.

    • Successfully meet LEU’s requirements and pass entry Process.

    • Work within a command structure requiring strict adherence to the following of orders.

    • Work in a team environment under stressful situations.

    • Quickly learn and put to use new skills and knowledge brought about by rapidly changing information and/or technology.

    • Learn and correctly apply LEU policies and procedures.

    • Read, comprehend, and follow simple oral and written instructions; and to understand and apply available guidelines to varied operational requirements.

    • Perform a wide variety of duties and responsibilities with accuracy and speed under the pressure of time-sensitive deadlines.

    • Demonstrate integrity, ingenuity and inventiveness in the performance of assigned tasks.

    • Operate a personal electronic device using program applications appropriate to assigned duties.

    • Communicate effectively both orally and in writing, with the public and other employees.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • High school diploma or GED equivalency

  • Must be at least 18 years of age at the time of application

  • Acceptable background investigation

  • Valid driver’s license,

  • Acceptable motor vehicle record

  • Reliable Transportation

  • Have an Android or Apple smartphone

  • Willingness and ability to learn

  • Desire to serve the community and volunteer time with LEU

Essential Physical Abilities:

The primary duties of this class are performed in a work environment in which the employee is subject to potential personal danger. Therefore, the following physical abilities are deemed essential:

  • Sufficient clarity of speech, hearing and other communication capabilities, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the volunteer to communicate effectively, including during emergency situations which may involve a high degree of noise.

  • Sufficient vision and other powers of observation, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the volunteer to effectively operate at an emergency scene.

  • Sufficient manual dexterity with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the volunteer to operate equipment used in rescue operations.

  • Sufficient personal mobility and physical reflexes, with or without reasonable accommodation, which permits the volunteer to perform all duties involved in protecting life and property.
